This Nine News item from 1999 reports on the world premiere in Los Angeles of the blockbuster movie, The Matrix. Interiors for the movie were shot at the Fox Studios at Moore Park, Sydney, while exteriors where filmed throughout the city.
The plot for The Matrix is heavily influenced by video game and internet culture, and is often described as an example of the cyberpunk genre of sci-fi.
The central concept is that what we believe is real is actually taking place inside an enormous computer program designed by a malicious computer code, a parallel universe of which we are mostly blindly unaware. Cinematically, The Matrix also resembles a video game.
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia acknowledges Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live and gives respect to their Elders both past and present.
