Japanese high school girls Kei, Kyoko and Nozomi are trying to put a band together for their school arts festival. But boys, endless storm-outs and hissy-fits and the fact their Korean exchange student lead singer Son can barely speak Japanese keep getting in the way. The best and most delightful of Japanese cinema’s cycle of Girl-band pop movies is often literally about pop dreams (with exhausted band members falling asleep at their instruments and dreaming of playing at the Budokan). Music by ex-Smashing Pumpkins’ James Iha, plus J-Pop heroes like The Blue Hearts and Baseball Bears.
