Arc Turns Five
Arc cinema opened its doors to Canberra and Australian audiences in early August 2007. A month of special screenings marks our fifth birthday and also, by neat coincidence, the arrival of state-of-the-art DCP digital cinema projection alongside our state-of-the-art celluloid film projectors.
Some of the first films we screened five years back return such as Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers. Five years after Rolf de Heer’s last feature, Dr Plonk, launched Arc with its Australian premiere, his new one, The King is Dead!, has its Canberra premiere. As will the elegiac Film Socialism: the first film legendary French director, critic and gnomic commentator Jean-Luc Godard has made specifically for digital projection – and also his official farewell to cinema.
And we’ll road test one familiar cinema classic, Singin’ in the Rain; but this time seeing how different a film-going experience it can be on the big screen when projected side-by-side in cinema formats past and new.
Arc Turns Five events and screenings will continue in September.
